Peace mediation and conflict resolution

Break barriers in peace negotiations and conflict resolution

Inclus is at the forefront of transforming how peace negotiations and conflict resolutions are approached, by fostering a platform where every voice is heard, and every stakeholder is engaged.

Inclus was established in 2012. Founders Mikaeli Langinvainio and Juha Törmänen leveraged their experiences at CMI, Nobel Peace Laureate Martti Ahtisaari’s Peace Foundation, to develop a digital tool to harness diverse stakeholder viewpoints in peace mediation processes.

Since its founding, Inclus has evolved to serve complex stakeholder-driven processes in corporate risk management, sustainability, and strategic planning.

Yet our work on peace and conflict resolution continues to this day through our active collaboration with CMI and other peace actors. Inclus is active on five contitents and has been involved in over 15 peace processes, solving challenging conflicts globally.

Pioneering the digital frontier

"Digital tools for participation allow stakeholders to map perspectives and jointly envision diverse future scenarios.

CMI has pioneered a digitally enhanced foresight methodology that has been applied in future-oriented dialogue processes in countries such as Yemen, Libya, Palestine, and Armenia.

Using the features of Inclus, participants jointly identified the root causes of the conflict and their interlinkages.

The resulting issue map and participants’ positioning within it were visualized on scatter plots, illuminating the complex dynamics at play."

Leveraging digital methods in the quest for peaceful futures: the interplay of sincere and subjunctive technology affordances in peace mediation

"While traditionally perceived as a human-centered activity, peace mediation now commonly entails information- and data-driven methods to enhance talks, support the analysis of conflict stakeholder needs and interests, and ground mediation efforts in better evidence.

Digital technologies also promise to make peace efforts more future-oriented by helping to predict or anticipate upcoming developments, build scenarios, and increase readiness for emerging challenges.

CMI’s future-oriented methods do not aim to assess the peace process with scientific accuracy but to explore the participant’s subjective positions on the different issues through participatory analysis."

Futures of cyberspace: Foresight and digital technology in peace mediation

"In 2018, a peace dialogue in Yemen faced a deadlock due to political differences.

Seeking to reignite the conversation, stakeholders were prompted to shift their focus to the future and contemplate the issues of utmost importance to them a decade ahead.

With a compilation of these key issues, peace mediators leveraged Inclus to conduct a cross-impact analysis.

This analysis provided a visual representation pinpointing areas of conflict that held high importance.

By envisioning the desired future a decade in advance and understanding which issues to focus on, mapping core concerns, and fostering collective action, foresight played a pivotal role in helping peace practitioners navigate the complex dynamics of the Yemen conflict landscape."
